What the Frak?!?

Just because you might know about money doesn't mean you know a darned thing about cars. What sort of actually sweet rides can you pick up for $12k? Well, in no particular order, you could get, in ABSOLUTELY PERFECT CONDITION, a:

  • 1991 Chevrolet Corvette
  • 1971 Alfa Romeo Spider
  • 1992 BWM 5Csi
  • 1974 Datsun 240Z
  • 1994 Alfa Romeo 164Q

I'm sure your list will be different, but no less cool. And, unlike the "sweet rides" in the article, at the end of five years these cars will still be worth more or less what you paid for them. Regardless, they'll all kick the crap outta one of those goofy little Smart cars, eh?

I see the 1971 Spider in here...is this a not-so-subtle way of saying you're trying to sell it?

I did a quick comparison on that article's list of cars to figure in TCI. Here's what I got:

Assume a 5 year loan, 7% interest, 15K miles, and $2.50/gallon of gas. Costs are as follows after 5 years:

-Smart - $15,286.87
-Accent - $13,138.30
-Versa - $13,207.89
-Rio - $14,906.60
-Aveo - $15,554.49

Seems to me that the Accent and the Versa are the winners, cost-wise. They'll also have more space than the Smart Car. Given that Nissan has pretty good quality, that's what I'd recommend. Now, if you live in a major city but need a car, the Smart wouldn't be a bad idea, but public transportation would be better if possible.

My list would include such fun things as a little British coupe (MG or MGB, something like that), a Unimog (probably over $12K) or maybe a deuce and a half, etc. Then again, I'm actively planning for the Zombie Apocalypse, so you have to take that into account.
