Bah. In MY Day...
I guess "inappropriate" is in the eye of the beholder. Are some of these toys weird? Yes. Are they tacky? Yes. Are they from cultures different from ours? Yes. When I was a kid, parents got lists of toys that would kill you. Good times, good times...
I remember going through the Sears catalog with a notepad and pencil at my side to make my Xmas lists. I'd list out the page, description, etc., of the things I wanted. That list regularly included firearms and the like. Pretty sure I listed a flamethrower more than once (not found in the Sears catalog, though, but I'm pretty sure Craftsman had one somewhere).
