I Can Haz a Snak?
Finally, a coconut crab picture with some scale. Ok, things without spines have no business being as big as a dog, mmkay? And I'd be damned annoyed if one disassembled my fence to get at my garbage. Raccoons are bad enough!

The big ones are slow and noisy, while the small ones would claim a finger at best. Plus, even though their skeletons are stronger than an insect's, they're not strong enough to compete with vertebrates. One good stomp or kick will kill them, no matter how big they get.
My recommendation? Save the ammo, use a crowbar. Take off the big claw with the first swing if you have to, otherwise just sweep with it and you'll leave a wake of dead, dying, and delicious arthropods.
They're pretty good garbage collectors, though.
