I Can Haz a Snak?

Finally, a coconut crab picture with some scale. Ok, things without spines have no business being as big as a dog, mmkay? And I'd be damned annoyed if one disassembled my fence to get at my garbage. Raccoons are bad enough!

And stay off my patio!

Update: Joshua found video!

Are you suggesting things with spines are ok doing all that?

I should clarify: invertebrates have no business crawling about big as a dog. I'm jus' sayin'...

It's the wonders of a calcium/magnesium alloy exoskeleton. Plus these crabs technically have lungs, which few other arthropods posess.

10 or 12ga shotgun with 000 buckshot should do the trick nicely. Make sure it's a pump action and loaded to the max and with one in the chamber prior to walking out.

I don't think that will be necessary, unless you happen to be a motionless pile of decaying organic matter. The big ones are slow and noisy, while the small ones would claim a finger at best. Plus, even though their skeletons are stronger than an insect's, they're not strong enough to compete with vertebrates. One good stomp or kick will kill them, no matter how big they get.

My recommendation? Save the ammo, use a crowbar. Take off the big claw with the first swing if you have to, otherwise just sweep with it and you'll leave a wake of dead, dying, and delicious arthropods.

They're pretty good garbage collectors, though.

Maybe you've missed the point that firepower makes pretty much everything better. And I've no need to conserve ammo right now.

Maybe in the future...
