Is it a Cat? A Bat? A Dog with a Hat?

Here's a ripe little mystery for you: can you name this animal?

About the size of a fox, but with short brown hair and a long cat-like tail, it looked more like an animal in a National Geographic spread out of Africa than any critter native to the woods of central North Carolina.

With, of course, a "[something]-in-headlights" picture!

looks like a cross with a fox and some other breed of canine - probably sterile if it is because I think the species are far enough apart that it shouldn't reproduce. I wouldn't say that it's the grey fox that lost its hair - it has too much hair and no real splotchy areas...

Joshua, a Puma is a Mountain Lion, big ole kitty cat that will bite your head off.

Looks like a Coydog to me. Coyote dog cross.

maybe a cross between a fox and a pharoah hound? big stretch though, since it's not all that common a breed.
