For the Record
Ever wonder what a town hit by a tornado looks like on Google maps? Wonder no more. On a lark I decided to look up my old home town of Dumas AR to see if Google had updated their picture cache of it with hi-res photos. They did, and (judging by what's there) they did it because of that tornado a few years ago.
At least, I hope they've actually cleaned the place up since then. With SE Arkansas, you just never know for sure.
A quick scan of the maps makes it look like it's mostly rebuilt. Where was the major damaged area?
Posted by: ronaprhys on August 29, 2008 10:54 AMWhoops! The link is zoomed in too far. Zoom it out until you can see the whole town, then look at the center-right portion of the picture. From that distance, it looks to me like a faint erase mark, but when you zoom down you'll be able to follow the trail of the tornado very easily.
Posted by: Scott on August 29, 2008 11:37 AMIt was two separate tornadoes hiting on the same day in February 2007. About 75% of the town was destroyed. I don't know when the google pictures were taken.

The pictures had to have been taken within a few weeks (I'm thinking just a few days) of the event. The damage is extensive, but in the context of the whole town, I'd speculate "only" a few dozen structures were destroyed or damaged. Substantial, but nothing even close to 75% destroyed.
