For the Record

Ever wonder what a town hit by a tornado looks like on Google maps? Wonder no more. On a lark I decided to look up my old home town of Dumas AR to see if Google had updated their picture cache of it with hi-res photos. They did, and (judging by what's there) they did it because of that tornado a few years ago.

At least, I hope they've actually cleaned the place up since then. With SE Arkansas, you just never know for sure.

A quick scan of the maps makes it look like it's mostly rebuilt. Where was the major damaged area?

Whoops! The link is zoomed in too far. Zoom it out until you can see the whole town, then look at the center-right portion of the picture. From that distance, it looks to me like a faint erase mark, but when you zoom down you'll be able to follow the trail of the tornado very easily.

It was two separate tornadoes hiting on the same day in February 2007. About 75% of the town was destroyed. I don't know when the google pictures were taken.

The report of 75% destroyed would seem to be an exaggeration. The pictures had to have been taken within a few weeks (I'm thinking just a few days) of the event. The damage is extensive, but in the context of the whole town, I'd speculate "only" a few dozen structures were destroyed or damaged. Substantial, but nothing even close to 75% destroyed.

$43.2 million dollars in damage. Could not find the article in Pine Bluff Commercial archives. Lots of stuff on Goggle.

The goggles, they do nothing.
