~ Bit By Bit, Putting it Together ~

Military history buffs in the peanut gallery (you know who you are) should find this photo essay on constructing a "Dark Ages" short sword worth a look. When it starts out a bunch of metal strips and ends up something you can wave at Grendel, well folks, I call that built from scratch for sure.

Very cool - even though the swordmakers back in the day couldn't go and purchase spec metals...

Personally, I'd love to have the stuff like this so I could make a claymore. I seriously need one of those to go with my kilt.

Ron--check out MuseumReplicas.com for a decent, not-insanely-expensive (I know how you Scots treasure thrifyness) claymores....

Interesting site. Not sure you could take those into battle, but maybe due to the advances in metallurgy...

Personally, I want to forge my own. That way when some bloody Englishman comes to my door trying to sell something, I've got no doubt that his head's coming right off his shoulders, first pass.

FREEDOM!!!
