Mario in Trouble?

Slashdot linked up this MSNBC article detailing a "pause" in Nintendo's production of it's flagship Gamecube product. While the article has some nice unproven FUD ("struggling"), it still shows everything is not completely well in Mario's world.

Oh shit

this comes as no surprise to me. I've watched Nintendo go from THE game system (remember the original 8-bit Nintendo.... I slaved on a paper route for months to buy that sucker!) to just another system flooded with them.

With the advent and growth of popularity, mixed with the backwards compatibility, Playstation 2 redefined the market. Nintendo needed to redevelop it's flagship games to compete. They failed miserably. The newest Zelda game stunk. simply sucked wind. They haven't put out a game rivalling Super Mario Brothers (1, 2 or 3... all of them rocked) in quite a while and 3rd party game-makers have flocked AWAY from Nintendo over to Sony in droves.

Simply put, they were too comfortable on top and forgot how to compete in a highly competitive and changing market. When Nintendo first broke it big in the US, it was in a market similiar to what we see now. Atari, Sega, Intellivision, etc. They all had 8-bit systems. So Nintendo sold a comparable system at a lower price with rockin' games and smooshed them all. They forgot how to do that effectively.

(thanks for the space and inspiration for my essay.... sorry about the length)
