What a Smashing Idea

A Dutch bishop has publicly called for God to be referred to as Allah during Christian services. The reaction was, to the credit of the Dutch, almost exactly what your reaction was just now. How such a complete nutball ended up in such a position of power is rather a mystery to me. Then again, most things Catholic are.

Hmm - aside from the whole, "Why dilute your religion" and "appealing to fanaticism" problems, here's a problem I see: The fanatics get their panties in a bunch whenever someone has a picture of Allah (see the mess with the Allah turban bomb for proof). Most Christian religions have no problem showing pictures of their god. Given that, we'd have pictures now labeled Allah, leading to riots and the like.

And as much as I enjoy a good riot...

Not Allah, Mohammed. Mohammed is He Who Must Not Be Drawn, unless you're a Muslim, in which case you can run ads of him selling tires and nobody bats an eye.

All these fatwas are really nothing more than an enormous theater of revolving grievances, that the jihadis use to break down the infidel's will to resist. It's basically the danegeld of the information age. Remember the Muslim who demanded that Burger King stop using a stylized picture of an ice cream cone because it looked like the Arabic symbol for Allah? If the Bishop actually did start using "Allah" instead of "God" in his sermons, he would be attacked by Muslims who were offended by that. The grievances just keep coming until you convert; then you can do anything you want, and as long as Allah himself doesn't personally step in and stop you, He endorses your actions, regardless of what your neighbors may think.

DAMMIT - I hate it when I mess up my comparisons.

meh - methinks the end result would still match my prediction. Riots everywhere.

Now, if I could just find a way to profit from them...
