Your veterinary office says it's important to deworm your pet twice per year! You end up with stuff like this.

Ascaris worms are also found in household pets that tend to go outside.

Yeah, mostly because the poor dumb animals will happily eat anything they find that smells even slightly like food, especially the poorly-digested vomit or poop of sick wild animals. Often these "treats" aren't even visible to the most watchful owner... stuff like squirrel droppings get licked up and swallowed, and all the owner sees is his pet snuffling at one spot for a little longer than usual, maybe licking its muzzle afterwards.

Think about that next time Fluffy licks your face.
