Opinions are Things that Happen to Other People

Actual phone conversation heard just now:

"Hey. Is Amber there? ... Well where is she?!? ... oh ... well, tell her to call me back ... I wanted to ask her what color I think I look good in ... Ok? Thanks..."

The best part is, she still doesn't get it. I have a feeling most women reading this still don't.

Oh. My. God.

Seems reasonable to me, maybe a guy just doesn't get it. lol

lolol - I have to agree with Pat. After all, we cook, clean, work, parent and basically make the world go 'round - you can't really expect us to know what we like, too, can you?

As the recipient of said call, I don't think it was out of the norm. Seems like something I'd expect...

Gah. Too hip for the room. Ok, let's examine the statement more carefully...

"I want to ask Jane what I think about something."

*Phut* *phut* *phut* ... is this thing on?

We got it, Scott, it's just that we can't believe you know so little about women. Hint: EVERYTHING women do requires a consensus, right down to individual thoughts. Even *I* know that.

When did I ever claim to know anything about women? Every man I've ever been around who's says he does usually ends up being proven wrong with remarkable speed.

Posted by: scott on December 8, 2004 08:56 AM

Sometimes women do want another opinion...there is nothing wrong with that..HUMANS do it all the time.

And what a completely patronizing statement that women dont think for themselves. Complete and utter BS.

You go Carrie Girl!!!!

Posted by: Pat on December 8, 2004 02:12 PM

Carrie,

Pair this:
And what a completely patronizing statement that women dont think for themselves.

With the previously said statement of:
I wanted to ask her what color I think I look good in

Love you babe, but they don't really go hand in hand. Asking someone what their opinion should be really doesn't scream "thinking for themselves."

Sheesh, who know such an innocent, funny conversation would rattle the cages.

CAGES?????

Posted by: Pat on December 8, 2004 02:38 PM

uhmmm - I was going to get involved, but I think it's best to stay out of the line of fire on this.
On the other hand, whose turn is it for Surreal Movie Night?

Posted by: Ron on December 8, 2004 03:06 PM

Just to make myself clear...it wasnt Scott's post that I was taking issue with. It was a cute anecdotal story.

What I did take issue with was this statement "EVERYTHING women do requires a consensus, right down to individual thoughts."

Its a generalizing, patronizing statement. Those kinds of statements irritate me regardless if it is about men, women, dogs, cats, whatever.

Posted by: carrie on December 8, 2004 04:03 PM

I think it is our turn for the movie night. (more correctly I think Carrie wants to be the one to pick the next flick for our submission).

Posted by: Joshua on December 8, 2004 04:22 PM

Well, anything she picks has got to be better than the Dunwich Horrors...

Posted by: Ron on December 8, 2004 04:38 PM

how come I'm the only one with no problem with my statement. I knew exacty what I meant. Amber what color do you think I think I look good in? And if she guesses the same color as me...we were right! .. see EASY!

got to have a back up plan ya know!

The guys are the only ones who seem to have trouble. As I said the the first comment "seems reasonable to me" lol

Posted by: Pat on December 8, 2004 05:53 PM

And yet, you've let far more patronizing jokes about women (and men, and cats) go unremarked, carrie... Maybe it was a little too close to the truth?

Posted by: Tatterdemalian on December 9, 2004 01:42 AM

First, congratulations for originally posting your comment on the wrong thread.

Second, this happened to be the first one that I have remarked on. What's your point? Doesnt mean that I didnt notice them. I can choose to comment or not comment. Oh look there I go thinking for myself again. And I didnt even ask a friend if I should or not.

Third, your comment inferring that women dont think for themselves is generalizing and demeaning. Just because women, like all people, occasionally ask the opinion of others doesnt mean that they dont think for themselves. Pose this comment to the women in your life and see what thier reaction is. I dont believe that you will find it favorable.

Posted by: carrie on December 9, 2004 03:24 AM

Fortunately, the women in my life happen to be blessed with something called a "sense of humor."

Posted by: Tatterdemalian on December 9, 2004 11:37 AM

Wait a minute, TIME OUT! I think Tatt is the only one who seems to have lost his sense of humor. This started out with comments ending with LOL don't know how it derailed. But I will bop my son when I see him in a couple of weeks. lol

Ok so as I have said before. I thought Scott's post was amusing. Its a cute "ellen" anecdote. Your response is what I didnt find amusing.

I have a very well developed sense of humor and can laugh at myself and others human nature.

Perhaps I am taking this too far but the tone of your statement did get a negative reaction from me. Maybe we just need to think that even in fun words can hurt, tear people down, and continue prejudices whether that was the intention or not.
