Brings a Whole New Meaning to "Giant Sucking Sound"

Oil prospecting seems simple enough... find a likely spot, drill a hole, and see if there's any oil down there. I mean, what could possibly go wrong?

The crew suspected that the drilling rig was collapsing under their feet ... The water of Lake Peigneur slowly started to turn, eventually forming a giant whirlpool. A large crater developed in the bottom of the lake. It was like someone pulled the stopper out of the bottom of a giant bathtub.

The whole thing reads like something out of a disaster movie. It fairly screams for CGI special effects. I guess the reason we haven't heard more about this event is because nobody got killed.

They should've paid attention to that hotline that you see posted around utility lines that tells you 'call before you dig'.

Now, it does seem that they tried, but didn't get the proper clearance before digging. Which is just funny.

And hell, I'm surprised it hasn't been made into a Lifetime movie where some random male (who was also a wife-beater, cheater, and kicked kitties for fun) was to blame, a female heroine (with a bumbling incompetent for a father or brother) saved the day by rescuing the three dogs mentioned...

Not humorous, but funny in a rediculous way. Safeguards were put into place to prevent calamities such as this one. In this case, though, someone didn't abide by the rules. It's a miracle that no human life was lost. Sadly only the three pups, and that in itself makes this a terrible disaster.
