Canada said on Tuesday it was looking at ways to cool down four trouble-plagued submarines it bought from Britain after a report revealed temperatures in one craft hit 65 degrees Celsius (149 degrees Fahrenheit) on a patrol.

149 degrees? Aren't they in the water to begin with? Waters that are too cold to risk extended submersion lest one suffer hypothermia and death?

Has Canada bothered to put that fact to good use? I mean, I live in SoCal's low desert, and my refrigerator keeps my milk and sodas cold just fine, despite triple-digit (F) summertime temps. I guess they must be using French technology...

Sadly, the water surrounding the sub isn't given enough surface area to pick up heat nearly as fast as the crews' bodies (and the electrical systems) put it out. Extra cooling pumps circulating water through the sub would help, but if they're not built into the submarine already you might as well just scrap the thing and start building over from scratch... or get some sucker to buy the sub to help fund your new model.
