Body Flex charged with false claims

FTC files lawsuit against maker of weight-loss product.

Body Flex spent $22 million this year to air its infomercial more than 2,000 times, claiming its program, which involves a breathing regiment and exercises with a plastic bar and elastic band, will help users drop four to 14 inches across six body areas in a week. The company says the routine could be done sitting down in 18 to 20 minutes a day.

If people could lose weight just breathing, no one would get off the couch.

BodyFlex is a crock. The claim that they've had "thousands of satisfied customers" doesn't mean much considering they've sold about 20 million of the stupid things. I bought the BodyFlex system last year, did it faithfully morning and night, as prescribed in the infomercial and instructions, for almost a full month, and was only able to gauge a 1 inch difference on my waist and absolutely no change on any other part of my body. I just got a letter yesterday saying they are offering a "full" refund of $40 some-odd dollars to any dissatisfied customers. Since I paid $73 for my BodyFlex kit, that letter and the inclusion that if there are a lot of claims full refunds will not be given was hardly a comfort--it just pissed me off all over again the way I felt pissed off when I first got it and it didn't work.

I personally used the system myself and got wonderful results. I lost 14 inches in 18 days. I am a firm advocate of the product. Others in my family used it and also had great results, not as great as mine but deffinatly saw significant loss.

ANYONE WHO IS IN DOUBT OF THIS PROGRAM NEEDS TO READ HER BOOK, EVEN IF YOU DON'T LOOSE ALL THE INCHES YOU THINK YOU SHOULD, IT WOULD BE IGNORANT TO THINK THERE WEREN'T WONDERFUL BENEFITS TO THIS TYPE OF BREATHING METHOD.

Posted by: Yar on January 11, 2005 10:55 AM

I AM USING BODY FLEX AND I LOST 31/2 INCHES THE FIRST WEEK AND ANOTHER 4 INCHES THIS WEEK.
I USED IT 3 YEARS AGO AND LOST ALOT OF INCHES BUT MY SELF ESTEEM SUCK AND WHEN MY FAMILY MADE FUN OF THE BREATHING I SAID F U AND SAID IF YOU DONT CARE I DONT I CARE. AND THEN I WENT FROM A 10 TO AN 18 IN STRETCHABLE CLOTHES. MEANING PROBABLY A 20 IN NON STRETCH. I FINALY AT THE POINT WHERE MY HEALTH WAS GETTING BAD AND I SAID I MUST DO THIS FOR ME. AND I WROTE MYSELF A NOTE THAT I SEE EVERY DAY THAT SAYS I BODY FLEX EVERY DAY. AND I HAVE FOR 2 WEEKS AND I NOW
DO NOT BREATHE HEAVY WHEN GOING DOWN STAIRS
I AM NOT FALLING ASLEEP ALL THE TIME AND
MY ENERGY LEVEL IS INCREASING. MY SELF ESTEEM
IS DOING WELL, NOW MY HUSBAND SEES THE DIFFERENCE AND HE IS ENCOURAGING ME, BUT IF HE DIDN'T THIS ONE IS FOR ME. I WANT TO LIVE A HEALTHY LIFE. I WANT TO BE IN FAMILY PHOTOS.
I KNOW BODY FLEX WORKS AND I AM THANKFUL THAT
GREER HAS THIS PROGRAM. IF YOU SHALLOW BREATHE YOUR RESULTS ARE NOT THE SAME. YOU MUST BREATHE
CORRECTLY AND DEEPLY. BREATHE ALL THAT STALE AIR OUT. YOU HAVE MORE AIR THAN YOU KNOW.

IF THIS DOES NOT WORK FOR YOU. THEN I BELIEVE YOU SHOULD HAVE SOME ONE WATCH YOU TO SEE HOW YOU ARE BREATHING.

SANDY.

i think sandy is right if you want good results, you have to do it right. i have been doing this excercise for two weeks now and i am very satisfied,i have lost at least 14 inches. i think you guys are just embarassed about the way you have to breathe so you hold back, if you do that, than you WILL be getting the crappy results that all the people that are doing wrong are talking about.

i am just starting to try bodyflex... i am in my first week? what should i expect, realistically, in terms of inch loss?

Posted by: ss on July 7, 2005 11:29 PM

I used body flex in high school, and lost about 7 inches in a month, but also gain SOOO much endurance from the breathing technique. I couldn't believe the difference! My basketball coach coudln't believe it either!
I love this product and agree, it looks absolutely weird, but you have to suck it up and look like an idoit, and then you will see results.

I STARTED USING BODY FLEX ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO AND LOST ALOT OF INCHES, THEN GOT OFF THE WAGON AND THOUGHT THAT I WOULD TRY WALKING AND OTHER EXERCISE PROGRAMS (AGAIN) AND (AGAIN) NOTHING COMPARES TO GREERS PROGRAM, ANY ONE CAN SAY WHAT THEY WANT BUT I AM A FIRM BELIEVER IN THIS PROGRAM AND IT ALSO HAS MANY HEALTH BENEFITS. TO THOSE OF YOU WHO DO NOT BELIEVE THIS CLAIM YOU SHOULD LOOK ON THE INTERNET AND READ ABOUT HOW GREAT DEEP BREATHING EXCERSISE IS FOR YOUR TOTAL BODY AND IT ALSO HELPS ME WITH PMS AND LOTS OF OTHER ILLNESSES. I ALSO HAVE THE BOOK BE A LOSER AND IT GIVES YOU LOTS OF INFORMATION. I WAS JUST LIKE GREER WHEN I HEARD ABOUT THIS I WAS LIKE YEAH RIGHT, BUT THEN I TRIED IT AND I GOT GREAT RESULTS MY HUSBAND NOTICES WHEN I HAVE BEEN DOING GREERS PROGRAM. THANKS GREER, JENNIFER IN LOUISIANA

I used body flex a few years back and got great results. I just started using the system again with the body flex bar and it is awesome. I am losing inches everywhere, even my problem stomach area. The pounds don't seem to disapear on the scale, but the inches mount up. My husband took notice. It feels weird at first because the breathing technique requires you to make strange noises and faces. But who can argue with what works. I've tried it all (walking, aerobics, yoga and pilates). Nothing has worked like body flex. If it isn't working for you, maybe you are not doing the breathing technique properly. I just know from my experience and others that it does work!

Seems BodyFlex can still afford to pay spammers to google for any signs of dissatisfaction with their product.

Posted by: Tatterdemalian on March 29, 2006 06:15 PM

I used Body Flex several years ago and I remember the great results just from the breathing. Yes, you do look and feel ridiculous doing the breathing, especially if someone is watching you. Do it privately then!! I am getting ready to order the new Body Flex Plus System and I am very excited about it!!!!

Posted by: Jill Stewart on April 4, 2006 09:34 AM

I have never bought a Body Flex tape, but I did borrow my sister's (she had the old one) long enough to learn the technique. I even made up a few extra exercises to go with it. It's been about a week and a half and I'm down a dress size, so I don't know. Seems to be working. I don't eat or drink for two hours before I do it, so maybe that helps. I would recommend anyone to try it. But don't spend the money if you're skeptical. Borrow it from the library or from a friend. It's not like you need to keep watching it after you learn the technique anyway. I haven't yet changed my eating habits, so I'm hoping to see even faster results with that. Still, I'm not complaining, because a dress size lost in 10 days is pretty good.

Posted by: Melissa on April 28, 2006 07:39 AM

This was funny to read and scan thru. You people are defending or ranting on some stuipd people who sell you a bar, rubber band. Then tell you how to breath. It really is quite funny when you think about it. Get up off the couch and go Run!

Oh yeah, then THERE IS CAPS LADY. and the i can't captilized lady.

Thanks for the laughs!

I tried the original b.f. years ago and had great success. I for some reason got bored and went back to the traditional forms of exercise like weights and cardio. I bulked up!! "They" say that can't happen but it did and I watched what ate so that wasn't it. All those people who are so negative about B.F. should just stop it!!! Go back to what ever form of exercise works for them and leave us Body flexers alone!

Posted by: karyn on June 11, 2006 09:25 AM

I lost 9 3/4 inches in the first three weeks of doing the Body Flex program without strict dieting. I feel great when I use this program; I sleep better, my memory retention has improved, I carry myself better - Silly as it might sound, I feel Taller and I feel like the entire Inside of my body is cleaner/healthier. It encourages me to lay off the junk food (even though I do cheat...)

My daughter bought her grad dress 2 months before grad and within one month she gained enough weight in the rib cage / bust area that we could not completely zip up the dress by 1 1/2 inches. Panic almost set in, and I said, well my dear - You are doing Body Flex with me for the next 4 weeks. Within 10 days, she she was back in the dress.

Anyone who doubts the benefits of this program seriously needs to reevaluate the accuracy of their breathing technique.

Posted by: Bonnie Rinker on June 16, 2006 02:00 PM

Has anyone tried the breathing technique with other exercise programs such as Pilates?

Posted by: Cyndi on June 24, 2006 09:44 AM

hello everyone!
i started using bodyflex about 3-4 days ago. i'm really interested if there will be any changes. now i can say that i feel that i had gained some weight :(.
ppl, can you help me with some advises? about eating and as i understand you need to breathe deep always??
i really hope that bodyflex will help me. but i'm also afraid that it wont ('cause as i said before i feel that i gained some weight).

Kind regards,
elle

I bought a body flex and started using it an I lost THIRTY POUNDS!!!! in two weeks! And even that is less the three days I spent in the hospital because I had a fish sandwich after buying the Body Flex and the fish was not cooked properly and I nearly died from food poisoning. But I am sure that the Body Flex works!!!!!!!

36 inches and 30 pounds lost in 3 months! What more can I say?

Posted by: Lynda on July 13, 2006 03:16 PM

This comment is to "Pixielee". I am not overweight but your comment really pissed me off. There are some people with disabilities or just too obese to "run". The point is...they have to start somewhere and if bodyflex is that starting point then good for them. Nobody asked you to be their cheerleader. By the way...you sound really ignorant, so the laugh is on you!

This is a wonderful program, and I speak from personal experience. I lost a whole dress size after using Body Flex for 3 days...you can't get any better than that.

If you have not achieved good results my suggestion would be that you review the instructional tape. The key to success is in mastering the deep breathing technique. Good Luck!

I started using the body flex 3 days ago -- I have a surplus of energy I haven't had in ages. There really must be something to this deep diaphramic breathing! I can hardly wait for the next 2 weeks to see if I can lose inches and dress sizes! The breathing seemed so odd, I had this program for 2 years without using it. Then I moved from state to state and just found it again, but I misplaced the body flex bar and just used an exercise band my son left lying around the house. Shame on me for not using it all along because I just didn't get the hang of the breathing on the first try!

Posted by: Michele on October 16, 2007 09:20 AM

i did body flex in high school and went down 4 sizes. now, ten years later, and after having a kid, i found another copy on amazon and my clothes are too big on me in two weeks. i was in ballet for 13 years when i was younger and i know the breathing is very important to the exercises. i think it's a great program and i wish i was getting paid to say that but i'm not.

Posted by: jennette gallese on December 10, 2007 06:50 PM

I am not a spammer. I am an objective person that studies all forms of exercise and I have been doing research on breathing for a future product of my one.

I am not connected to body flex in anyway. Yes they got sued and yes they are giving refunds any time you sell a product that works it'd not going to work for every one becuase not every one does it properly or consistently and also if you are doing it thinking this is B.S. it probably won't work for you, if you doubt the mind-body connection then read up on the power and statistics of placebos that are very well documented in the medical community.

Now does it work? Well I know for a fact you can lose weight from just breathing differently. That has been documented by many authors, doctors and there are many different books and courses on breathing to change your life, lose weight and improve your weight.

Just breathing full deep breathes rather than shallow breathing can cause you to lose weight, the body flex method is more intense and I have no doubt that they work for oxygenation and weight loss. I just body the system to take a look at and I plan of giving it to my mother as I bench over 300lbs. But I still plan on using the breathing techniques alone.

The problem is that people are ignorant and lazy, the ignorant ones post in places like this calling ti a scam without ever trying it.

The lazy ones. Try the exercises, but still eat their pint of Ben & Jerry's ever day, and sneak in a couple of donuts not and then. And say it didn't work. That's not giving it a fair chance.

Posted by: Nico on June 26, 2008 06:47 PM

the bodyflex law suit was when the exercise bar was brought into the exercise program. which in my experience interferred with the program. the initial program is the best. the bar is uncomfortable to use and i didn't get the results as much until i added the old program with it. the bar was added because the bodyflex's old program only burns fat and makes you lean but is not intended to built muscle mass, so she added the bar. this is where the trouble began and she also got into trouble because she didn't ad a diet plan with her program. so the exercise bar is what messed up the flawless reputation she had worked so hard for many years.

so i began body flex about three years ago.it helped with inches in my stomach and toning my muscles, where they were taut, but slim which as a woman was my desire .the weight: i had to honestly eat right, but my lung power and endurance jumped thru the roof. i would recommend it for the oxygen it introduces into your system alone.

Posted by: lola on August 30, 2008 10:47 AM

I just started using Body Flex two days ago and already have had a surge of energy and feel leaner through the middle...looking forward to measuring again!

Posted by: tina on November 8, 2008 07:23 PM

I really enjoy the body flex program. It helped me on my journey from 237 pounds to 139 pounds.
It was the only excercise I did. My mom made me show everybody who crossed our path how to do the deep breathing...you should have seen some of their faces when my stomach was so sucked in for that 8 seconds and how big their eyes got when I opened my mouth and it appeared as though my stomach just dropped. I am starting my program again now that my girls are a little older...(I had to stop for a while because they would imitate my breathing and I could not tell if they were actually hyperventalating) I am down 6 pounds in 1 week and still focused.

Posted by: linda on January 14, 2009 11:42 PM

I bought the program 15 years ago, used it a bit and quit (I was 29, all I had to do to lose weight was replace one cheeseburger a week with a ham sandwich). I am now following the Jon Gabriel weightloss method, which is easy, so I consider my eating issues more or less resolved. However, even with that and exercise, I've still been gaining about a size every few weeks. I "threw it up to God" and something told me to pop in that old Body Flex tape. After these first few days, my stomach is easily a good couple inches flatter. I'm not saying this is fat loss - I think it has more to do with re-establishing the mind-body connection to my abs, rather than having them sag out, fat, internal organs, lunch, and all. I'm short-waisted, and my abs need strengthening simultaneous with pulling in, which is where Body Flex has no equal. I also woke up SPRY at 6:00 am today. Normally I'm struggling to get out of bed by 8:00. So we'll see!

Posted by: Jill on March 27, 2009 03:52 PM

I used the first and second body flex tapes and they worked really quick and just like she said I actually didn't change my eating habit and I only did the 10 minute breathing exercise only 4 times a week and I lost some much weight. People could not believe that I lost the weight from just breathing and barely moving. When I showed the tape to people they would laugh at the faces and the sounds being made but I don't give a damn. I don't have to be doing any straining running, or anything big to lose the weight this is the best ever. If it doesnt work for you then I don't know why or what will.

Posted by: Lulubayb on September 28, 2009 08:53 PM

If you haven't tried it, don't knock it. I get very annoyed with people who criticize things they've never experienced for themselves. I see no indication that the writer of the above comment has tried Body Flex.

And if someone or something is being investigated, does that mean the charges are, without a doubt, true??? If it does, I'm in the wrong country.

There are many, many proponents of deep breathing exercising as a way to control not only weight but many other ailments from which many of us suffer! And many of those have MD or like medical titles associated with their names. I doubt that they would put their medical licenses and reputations on the line without facts to back up what they're saying.

I guess it comes goes down to the adage, "Everyone's entitled to their opinion but it doesn't make them right." Each person needs to do their own investigation into a product and /or company, before committing time and money, to make sure it is legitimate and suited to their needs. Unless, the company and/or product is brand new, the internet is a valuable resource for checking things out... web searches, blogs, social sites.

Body Flex works!!! Amen.

I would just like to say that Body Flex is amazing and so is Greer Childers. I think she has "been there" and is a very compassionate woman. I bought her tapes years ago and got immediate results...it just makes sense. Anyone who is skeptical should just try it for a week. You'll see the difference if you do the breathing routine correctly everyday. Hats off to BodyFlex!

Posted by: Patty on October 19, 2009 07:52 PM

Isn't it interesting when you find something that works there is ALWAYS someone right around the corner that wants to ruin it??!!! I, myself, had bought Greer's system quite a few years ago...it is an AMAZING system. There are so many benefits over-and-above the weight loss. I feel amazing, have lost weight/inches so very quickly and in such a short amount of time. I am sooooooooooooooooo very pleased with her system!!! Thank you, Greer!!!!

I learned Bodyflex some time ago but never took it on as a habit even though each first day I did it I would notice my facial muscles tighter and less double chinned. However I have recently started to do it again religiously. I am so excited in just two days I have already lost six inches. At this rate I can be in a much smaller size by my brithday in three months when I will be 61 years young.
Please perservere it does work and i am going to do it religiously now as it is definately working. (No, I did not measure myself before so did not see the changes on a daily basis).
Thank you Greer Childers

I bought Body Flex years ago, and it was great. I started doing newer workout videos and ended up going from 160 to 220 lbs.
A few weeks ago, I popped in my Body Flex again. I'm now back where my clothes are starting to get loose again and all that oxygen makes you feel great!
I have a vacation planned for June 1st, and I hope I look great when the time comes. I only see my family once a year, so hope I can wow them this year, with great results.
