HIV as Therapy?

I'd read about something like this long, long ago in a science fiction novel (Greg Bear, I think, can't remember the title). I really think that instead of developing fancy nanomachines or creating super vaccines, we'll eventually learn to harness our own immune systems and have them do all the delicate work. They are spectacularly sophisticated and subtle.

This is already happening. One of the methods is call "gene therapy", spectacular research is occuring all over the world. Big breakthroughs are expected in the next 5-10 years.

Sometimes this can actually work.....but the truth is, the bureaucratic bullshit that is required for things like this to go forward is staggering. And, honestly, I don't relish the idea of having some eccentric loon funding it either.

At some point, people are just going to have to realize that it's our own fault that we have such a tough time fighting illness......oops....BLOG FODDER!

Thanks for the inspiration!!!
