I don't think I've ever seen anything bring out the rabble like this 'ask slashdot' article on diamonds. Most /. discussions grab ~ 250, a real cage-rattler will bring out ~450. This one got 1550. Lots of good discussion, but you'll probably want to set the comment filter on 4 like I do to separate the wheat from the chaff (the comment filter is the a#1 best thing about slash... I love it to death).
Posted up here because we have at least two regular readers who are rabid diamond consumers. One of them happens to be my co-author. :)
Update: Don't miss this one. Sounds like a lot of conversations I have in my house.

Hey! Mama made me a total addict!! I wont accept anything less from now on! She is a WONDERFUL teacher in the art of jewels.
You KNOW I wont accept anyting less than 1/2 carat from now on * Ted says to up that to 1 carat*
You don't have anything less than 1/2ct already. Jason what if we just buy estate diamonds, nothing new. I know it is not a joke but I have loved and collected diamonds my whole life. April birthstone is a diamond.
I wouldn't be opposed to old school baubles and trinkets. ;-)
I just worry heavily about the new ones and an industry that's okay with 40% of its merchandise coming from nefarious means...
I promise to try to buy only estate pieces and have them remounted. I have two daughters-in-law I have taught bad habits, the love of diamonds, when it comes to jewelry. There were rumors about Tanzanite stones right after the 9/11 attacks that proved to be untrue. Ruined the market for the stones for several months.
